What is Blue Topaz?
Blue topaz is not only the most desired topaz, it’s one of the most popular of all gemstones on the market. One reason is its stunning natural clarity and sparkle this gem possesses. It scores a high 8 on the Mohs scale making it one of the more sturdy gems for jewelry.
This gemstone ranges in color from a light cool blue to a deep “inky” blue and the various shades have their own designation. The lightest blue topaz is sky blue, as it calls to mind a sunless summer sky. Swiss blue is a more vibrant medium shade and the deepest, most intense color option is the London Blue Topaz. It is also the most valued of the three; though all are considered abundantly available and very affordable as gemstones go. To achieve these gorgeous colors, most blue topaz used in jewelry has been treated. Natural blue topaz straight from the earth is rare, usually light in color, and is enhanced through irradiation.
