What is Tourmaline?
The word ‘tourmaline’ comes from ‘toramalli’ in Sinhalese meaning “mixed gems.” It makes sense; tourmaline comes in a wide mix of colors, yet it is very unique in one characteristic. It is the only common mineral that crystalized in the trigonal system- three sided prisms. The stone measures a 7-7.5 on the Mohs Hardness Scale.
Tourmaline is one of the birthstones for October, pearl being the other. It is also the traditional gift for an eighth wedding anniversary.
The Many Colors of Tourmaline
Tourmaline comes in almost every color and those colors are determined by various minerals that are present in the stone. Several variations have their own names.Rubellite refers to red and pink toumaline. Watermelon tourmaline is a combination of green and pink. Indicolite is purple and chrome toumaline is an exotic green. According to GIA , the most valuable toumaline is the blue-green Paraíba .
Where is Tourmaline Found?
Up until the 1800s, the Tourmaline didn’t even have its own identity. Specimens were grouped in with other like-colored gemstones. Today tourmaline is found in igneous and metamorphic rocks in Australia,Afghanistan, Brazil, China, Congo, Kenya, Mexico, Russia, Sweden, and the U.S. Historically, the main mining of tourmaline in the U.S. as occurred in California.
Meaning & Symbolism
Most gemstones have a history of being associated with metaphysical properties and tourmaline is no different. It is thought to settle negative thoughts and emotions, mend heartaches, and encourage compassion and thoughtfulness.
Record-Breaker
The largest tourmaline ever found was discovered in Brazil weighing in at a gigantic 192 carats.
